Academic and Institutional Audits




Carrying out institutional audits provides critical information on the state of Higher Education in Zimbabwe.

Aspects Highlighted when Carrying out Institutional Audits

  1. The mandate of the institution

  2. The mandate provides information on why and for what purpose an institution was established. Any changes to the mandate are registered and explained. Faculties, departments and programmes within the institution are expected to have relevance to the mandate.
  3. Infrastructure and Equipment

  4. The infrastructure and equipment available should be adequate and relevant to the institutional mandate.
  5. Staff Qualifications

  6. The institution is expected to have adequate personnel who are relevantly qualified. Highly qualified personnel are necessary especially where higher degree programmes are on offer.
  7. Student Population

  8. The student population is expected to correspond to the recommended lecturer/student ratio inorder to insure effective and productive lecture/student interaction.
  9. Governance

  10. Higher education institutions are expected to have functional governance structures that promote academic excellence in areas of teaching, research and community service.
  11. Benchmarks

  12. Benchmarks help to understand and appreciate aspirations of an institution. They also help to come up with performance equivalents that determine the value of an institution to the development of higher education in Zimbabwe.


How often are Audits carried out?

Academic and Institutional audits are carried out at agreed intervals between ZIMCHE and Institutions.

Institutional Audit Personnel

Audits are carried out by trained personnel who are selected from higher education institutions.

Audit Results

Audits results provide critical information on all matters of importance to a higher education institution.
