New ZIMCHE Council meets

The new Zimbabwe Council For Higher Education (ZIMCHE) council members who were appointed recently held their first meeting on 10 August, 2017 at the ZIMCHE offices in Harare.

The 18 member Council set up in accordance with Section 7 of the ZIMCHE Act is chaired by Professor Ngwabi Mulunge Bhebe. The council met at a time when the higher and tertiary education system in Zimbabwe has started the process of transformation that is emphasising on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives.

ZIMCHE is a quality assurance agency whose overall function is quality assurance. Its functions can be subdivided into three categories as follows:

  1. At one level ZIMCHE is a regulatory body (in respect of the accreditation, registration, auditing and, where necessary, de-registration or closure of institutions – all these aspects are central to the quality assurance function of the agency).
  2. At another level ZIMCHE acts as an advisory body (advising the Minister and higher education institutions).
  3. ZIMCHE also plays a coordination and facilitation role (coordinating the development of higher education in the country; facilitating the promotion of quality, the training of higher education personnel and cooperation between institutions; and promoting regional cooperation in higher education).
