In a groundbreaking move, the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) made its inaugural appearance at the Chancellor of Zimbabwe State Universities Staff Games (CZSUSG). The 12th edition of the games, hosted by the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo from 17-22 June 2024, brought together 13 institutions from across the country.
The games featured a wide range of sporting disciplines, including athletics, netball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, tug of war, golf, pool, table tennis, chess, and darts, as well as traditional games like draught, nhodo and tsoro.
ZIMCHE fielded a small but spirited team that took part in netball, basketball, darts, golf, tug of war, tsuro and nhodo. Although they didn’t bring home any medals, the ZIMCHE team left a lasting impression, captivating opponents and spectators alike with their infectious energy and unwavering determination.
The overall winners of the games were Great Zimbabwe University, with Midlands State University and the University of Zimbabwe taking second and third place, respectively. The host institution, NUST, finished in fourth place.
Held under the theme “Higher Education: A Vehicle to Innovate and Industrialise the Nation,” the games provided an invaluable opportunity for university staff to foster connections and socialise outside of their everyday work environments, promoting both physical and mental well-being.
The 13th edition of the CZSUSG is set to take place at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) in 2025, promising even greater excitement and camaraderie within the higher education community.
